What is Reported on GI-MAP Test Results?
The Gastrointestinal Microbial Assay Plus (GI-MAP) is an innovative clinical tool that measures gastrointestinal microbiota DNA from a single stool sample with state-of-the-art, quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) technology.
The GI-MAP was designed to detect microbes that may be disturbing normal microbial balance or contributing to illness as well as indicators of digestion, absorption, inflammation, and immune function.
Why Is Quantification Using qPCR Technology So Important?
Unlike other comprehensive stool tests on the market, the GI-MAP can provide practitioners with truly quantitative results. qPCR offers a much more accurate way to detect and quantify clinically relevant organisms than standard PCR, culture, microscopy, or DNA sequencing-based methods. Accurately assessing how much of an organism’s DNA is present in a patient’s stool sample is essential for helping practitioners to determine the clinical significance of pathogenic organisms and dysbiosis patterns.
qPCR’s Reliability, Reproducibility, and Use in Clinical Research
qPCR is used routinely in clinical and academic research because it provides highly accurate quantification, as well as high levels of sensitivity and specificity. Standard PCR technology doesn’t offer the same level of sensitivity, or the ability to express precise numerical results.
The GI-MAP also provides consistently reproducible results. Reproducibility is of crucial importance to the practitioners and patients that rely on the efficacy of the GI-MAP. NOTE: Please review all instructions and collection kit components before starting your sample collection. DO NOT discontinue taking prescription medications unless directed by your physician.
Step 1 – Write the Patient Name, Date of Birth (on ID Number line*), and Collection Date on theSpecimen Vial.
* No ID Number — Use space for Date of Birth.
Step 2 – If possible, void urine prior to collecting stool to avoid mixing it with your stool sample. Put gloves on and pass stool into provided Collection Tray.
Step 3 – Using the spoon attached to the cap of the specimen vial, spoon stool from multiple areas of the sample (ie., from at least 4 areas going left to right) into the vial. Fill vial to the red “Fill Line” indicated on the label.
Failure to add sufficient sample may result in the laboratory not being able to process the sample. DO NOT DISCARD THE PINK LIQUID IN THE SPECIMEN VIAL.
Step 4 – Carefully mix stool and fluid with the spoon (attached to the cap). Replace cap tightly and shake vial vigorously for 30 seconds.
Step 5 – A) Fill out the Test Request Form completely and place form into the document holder of the Specimen Bag.
NOTE: Be sure to write the date of sample collection on the form. Payment type must be completed and payment included to process sample.
B) Place capped Specimen Vial containing the collected stool sample into the Specimen Bag along with Absorbent Pad and seal the bag.
C) Place the Specimen Bag with the collected sample and Test Request Form into the Kit Box.
D) Ship completed Kit Box back to Diagnostic Solutions Laboratory using the FedEx Clinical Pak Mailer provided. Please make note of tracking numbers when shipping your package. See shipping instructions below.**
**Stool sample must be received within 6 days of collection. If you cannot ship the specimen on the day of collection, please refrigerate and ship as soon as possible, preferably within 3 days.
Specimens may be shipped Monday through Friday. The lab receives specimens 5 days a week. We only require that the specimen be received within 6 days after collection.
Before shipping be sure that the capped Specimen Vial is tightly secured, and the Test Request Form are labeled and completely filled out including payment. Be sure the Sample Vial is sealed in the Zip Closure Specimen Bag and that the Test Request Form are in the Kit box.
US – Call FedEx at 1-800-463-3339 to Schedule Your Pickup
- When the automated greeting begins say, “Schedule a pickup.”
- When asked if your label has the word “Stamp” on it, say, “Yes.”
- Your tracking number can be found on the Return Label.
Canada and US Territories
- Complete the name, address, phone number, and signature sections on the 3 commercial invoices and waybill.
- Place the completed invoices and waybill in the clear pouch and affix pouch to the front of the clinical pak.
- Call FedEx at 1-800-463-3339 to schedule your pickup. When the automated greeting begins say, “Schedule a pickup.”
- When asked if you are shipping a package say, “Yes.”
- Let them know you are shipping using an International Waybill.
- Complete the name, address, phone number, and signature sections on the 3 commercial invoices.
- Place the completed invoices in the clear pouch and affix pouch to the front of the clinical pak.
- Take the clinical pak to a FedEx (or carrier of your choice) location to ship the package.

What are the sample collection requirements?
- Collection kits come with easy-to-follow instructions for the patient.

How much stool is required to be provided for testing?
- Please fill the vial to or slightly above the FILL Line indicated on the vial label.
- Use the spoon attached to the inside of the vial lid.
Do I need to stop taking any of my medications before I collect my GI-MAP sample?
- No. Please continue taking all medications unless otherwise directed by your provider.
What do I do about missing absorbent material?
- The absorbent material is not required, but you can substitute it with a napkin/paper towel.
My collection kit did not include a Test Requisition Form.
- Please contact Meenta at email@example.com. You will need a completed test requisition form to receive your results.
I spilled some of the liquid from the collection vial. What should I do?
- If you only spilled a small amount, you can still use the vial.
- If you spilled a large amount or you feel you need a new vial, please contact your clinician, or call Diagnostic Solutions for a replacement vial.
I accidentally threw out the collection kit box. Can I use different box?
- Yes, use any clean small box.
I sealed the shipping bag but forgot to put the paperwork in the kit. Can I reopen it?
- Yes, just tape it closed securely before shipping.
Is the patient responsible for postage?
- U.S. – No, collection kits include a pre-paid 2 business day return label if mailed within the U.S.
- International – International customers must pay for shipping unless a prior contract exists.
Can I drop off my collection kit at a local FedEx office?
- Yes, please follow the packing and shipping instructions provided with the collection kit.
Can I ship my stool specimen on Friday?
- Yes, it is ok to ship stool specimens to us on Friday. The lab receives specimens 5 days a week. We only require that the specimen be received within 6 days after collection.
